Ban Tha Sawang is a village renowned for weaving beautiful silk and has been praised as “weavers of one thousand four hundred and sixteen heddles” when they presented a fold of Gold shot thread silk to Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, Queen Consort of His Majesty the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great. This village has a weaving hall that is rare to see and is a study center for silk weaving in every process as well as possessing a trove of ancient silk. There is also a silk and silk products shop. Ban Tha Sawang village is not far from the city, especially for silk lovers. It is worth the visit and purchase the most famous souvenir from Surin.
From the initiative of the “Chansoma” Gold shot thread silk weaving group’s handicrafts and arts products which is an ancient royal court weaving conservation and revival group headed by Veeratham Trakulngern, Kingdom Artist, as the core leader who invited the villagers to join the weaving group. With beautiful intricate pattern designs in the royal court weaving methods and local weaving techniques resulting in amazing silk which is worldwide renowned. The most significant achievement is when the village was selected by the government to weave the fabric for the shirts and shawls of 21 leaders and their spouses who attended the APEC summit in 2003, hence the name “APEC weaving village”. They also received the 5 stars National OTOP award.
